Job Brief

The Holland Chorale is seeking a passionate, dedicated and accomplished Artistic Director and Conductor.  The ideal candidate has a high-level musical education combined with a deep knowledge of choral repertoire, performance practices, and excellent conducting skills. The successful Artistic Director will recruit, inspire and enable singers to perform at their best, fostering a sense of community and commitment within the group.

Overview of Holland Chorale

The Holland Chorale has served Holland and the Greater West Michigan community for 65 years. Under the leadership of founder Calvin Langejans, and subsequent artistic directors Gary Bogle, Ryan Kelly, Meredith Bowen, and Dr. Patrick Coyle, the Chorale has persisted in its pursuit of excellence in choral music and promotion of the arts. During its lifespan, our community has supported us through patronage of our concert series, purchase of our recordings, and underwriting of our projects.

With approximately 60 active singers comprising a diverse span of musical experience, the Chorale is a powerful advocate for choral excellence. The building of lifelong choral singing through education is a major component of the Chorale’s mission. Members of the Chorale are comprised of choral and instrumental music educators, musical theatre and opera performers, and gifted amateur singers. Our choral experience ranges from memorable performances in Carnegie Hall in 2011 and a European tour in 2000, to local performances and highly acclaimed performances at ACDA and MENC conferences. Holland Chorale staff consists of the Artistic Director, Operations Manager, Vocal Coach and Principal Accompanist.

Repertoire & Performances

The Chorale’s performance season includes four full-length concerts, educational events in conjunction with local high school choirs, and community outreach performances. Holland Chorale has performed major works which have included Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and Magnificat, Handel’s Messiah, Verdi’s Requiem and Te Deum, Brahms’ Requiem, Faure’s Requiem, Mahler’s Symphony no. 8, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Vivaldi’s Gloria and Magnificat, Copeland’s In The Beginning, and Craig Hella Johnson’s Considering Matthew Shepard, etc. The group has performed with the Holland, Grand Rapids, West Shore, Kalamazoo, and other regional symphony orchestras and the West Michigan Flute Orchestra. Other composers commissioned by the Chorale to write works for the group include Alice Parker, Norman Dello Joio, Karel Husa, Daniel Pinkham, Cecil Effinger, Stephen Paulus, Jenni Brandon, and Gwyneth Walker. In 2024 we will perform a variety of choral repertoire from current composers including Kyle Pederson, Ivo Antognini, Dan Forrest, Joan Szymko, Elaine Hagenberg and Shawn Kirchner. For a more complete list of the Chorale’s works performed, please see the “Major Works Performed” link below.

The Chorale and audience alike enjoy familiar American and classical choral music as well as musical theatre and the best of current composers. We produce an annual event, “Adventures in Harmony,” that brings together the Holland Chorale and 200-250 high school singers with a master conductor in a day-long workshop and evening performance. The immediate past season included a choral cabaret entitled Slightly Scandalous: The Music of Cole Porter. Our major fundraising gala in the spring is called “A Grand Night for Singing”. Events can naturally change or develop over time as appropriate.
